Boise Art Museum Just the Right Size

Some museums are too big. The Boise Art Museum doesn’t suffer that fate. Of, if you live in a place like Portland, it’s great to have the expanded Portland Art Museum because you can visit it over and over. But when you’re driving through a place like Boise, it’s nice to be able to see most of the exhibits in the Boise Art Museum in an afternoon.

Tribute To Be Semper Fi

A Marine takes a step, stops, looks over his shoulder and is immortalized in a moment in time in a bronze sculpture. Artist Benjamin Victor was selected to design the Newport Beach memorial to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines. His maquette, or small-scale model, was unveiled Friday at City Hall.

Statue Honoring Marine Battalion Unveiled in Newport

A model of a bronze-and-granite monument that will be built in honor of the city’s adopted Marine battalion was unveiled today. The sculpture, designed by 28-year-old Benjamin Victor of South Dakota, will be built at Castaways Park and be dedicated on Memorial Day 2008.

Council Approves Tribute Design

The city will begin raising money for a monument to the Camp Pendleton Marine unit it adopted in 2003, after a council vote Tuesday to approve a design for the monument and the suggested location at Castaways Park.

Ben Victor’s ‘The Seasons’ Sculpture Designed for Clinic

The subject of this work is the cycle of nature, the four seasons. It is the intersection of nature and time transformed into three dimensional space. Around the base each season appears in human form. At the top soars a representation of the daily progression in the figure of Dawn and Dusk. In technique and expression, The Seasons is a meeting of the classical and the contemporary, the old and the new.

Absolutely Aberdeen

When you enter Aberdeen, the sign greeting you says about 25,000 people live there. An organization called “Absolutely Aberdeen!” would like to see that number grow before the city updates its signs again. The group’s been working to reach that goal since it formed last year.

Sculpture Unveiled on August 4, 2007

On Saturday, August 4, 2007, the Redlin Art Center unveiled a new sculpture inside the Redlin Gallery. The piece was commissioned by long-time friend and advisor to the Redlins, John P. Schwan. The life-size bronze bust of Terry Redlin is a gift to the Redlin family from Mr. Schwan and his partners, Sarathi Giridhar and Michael Duch of Schwan Financial Group. The sculpture is now on permanent display inside the Redlin Art Center.

Artists Submit Entries for Newport Memorial

Fire Stations Await Bids for New Facilities

Aberdeen’s new fire facility will have a bust of a firefighter while the downtown station will have an 8-foot-tall statue. The city plans a project to build the new fire facility and remodel two others. The new facility and the remodeling of the downtown station will be bid in early July. A third station at the airport will be bid at another time.

One of Their Own

There’s a new firefighter at the Aberdeen Fire Department, and although he’s not real, he certainly looks the part. The nearly 8-foot-tall statue is a creation of 27-year-old Ben Victor, an artist in residence at Northern State University who is well known for his sculpture process.

Winnemucca Sculpture Installed at Park

August 29, 2006

A bronze sculpture of Sarah Winnemucca by artist Benjamin Victor was installed at Hill Center North Business Park in Summerlin on Aug. 9. The work will permanently sit at the entryway to the business park, standing before a convex rock wall surrounded by white benches. The original sculpture represents Nevada in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the U.S. Capitol.

City of Lawrence, City Manager Office: Memorandum

The proposed sculpture was selected from among 62 entries from across the United States that were submitted in response to a Call for Qualifications sent out in February 2006. The selection committee was comprised of 7 persons including city staff, members of the Arts Commission, neighborhood representatives, artists and a Kansas University representative. The committee reviewed the entries and selected 6 finalists. The finalists were invited to visit Lawrence and meet with the committee on May 8 & 9, 2006. On May 19, 2006 the committee met again and selected Mr. Benjamin Victor’s proposal for the project. Mr. Victor plans to create a 7’6” tall bronze sculpture of a firefighter in full bunker gear. The sculpture will be located near the east entrance of Fire/Medical Station no. 5 Administration Offices.

Aberdeen Artist Victorious

June 2006

Aberdeen sculptor Ben Victor continues to make his artistic mark in places far from Aberdeen. Iowa’s First Lady Christie Vilsack recently called Victor to tell him he’s been selected to create a sculpture of Belle Babb Mansfield, the first woman licensed to practice law in the U.S. in 1869.
