“The Marine Memorial” by sculptor Benjamin Victor is placed in Castaway Park with our flag flying high by its side. It depicts a young Marine in full battle gear about to leave on assignment.

The unveiling at the visitor’s center along Interstate 80 was not merely to celebrate the sculpture’s aesthetic value, but also to embrace the union of government and tribal representatives behind its existence.

All eyes were on “Generations” a statue by Benjamin Victor, of Aberdeen, that was unveiled Friday evening in front of the main entrance of the Wheat Growers headquarters at 908 S. Lamont in Aberdeen. The unveiling was part of the 90th Anniversary celebration.

The new sculpture, entitled “Our Heritage is Our Future,” displays a Great Basin native woman holding a woven basket and carrying an infant in a cradleboard on her back.

The sculpture, entitled “Our Heritage is Our Future,” was created by artist Benjamin Victor, who was chosen by a committee of local Native American artists, historians, and Trail Center Manager Gary Koy.

“This sculpture of a generic great basin woman represents the native people of this area. It will be the first thing people see as they enter the Trail Center representing the native people were here first,” said Trail Center Manager Gary Koy. “On their way out, they will see the back side of the sculpture where there will be a cradleboard representing future generations.”

The Bakersfield City School District will induct nine people into the BCSD Hall of Fame. Inductees are former students who are notable for their professional accomplishments, and community members who have distinguished themselves by their service to the district.

South Dakota artist Benjamin Victor is commissioned to create this sculpture and brought his work in progress to the Iowa Historical Building for a two week artist in residency to get the final details right.

“This is great for the state. It is great for the legacy of Norman Borlaug,” Schickler said. He said DuPont Pioneer’s donation was logical, given that the humanitarian contributions Borlaug made throughout his life were consistent with DuPont’s business objectives.

There is also a program at 11 A.M. with Ben Victor, the artist chosen to create the statue of Borlaug that will go into the U.S. Capitol next year on Borlaug’s 100th birthday. The Food Bank of Iowa will be collecting donations inside the building.

Ben Victor is creating the model that will be used to make a bronze statue and he set up shop last week in a studio inside the State Historical Building in Des Moines.
