His most recent work has been installed on the campus of Boise State University — a 9-foot bronze statue of Steve Appleton. The likeness of Appleton stands, hand reaching out, in the courtyard on the east side of the Micron Business and Economics Building.

This beautiful and life size bronze sculpture depicts a Great Basin native woman holding a woven basket and carrying an infant in a cradleboard on her back. The statue is symbolic in that it represents the Indigenous population that greeted the immigrants as they passed through northern Nevada on their way to California or Oregon.

Though he died in 1981, Cecil Harris’ life-size bronze likeness will live on for generations to come as it sits just outside Spafford Hall on Northern’s campus. Just as the artist who made the statue — Northern artist-in-residence Benjamin Victor — wanted, Harris is looking over the campus he once frequented, then Northern State Teachers College, before graduating upon his return from combat.
