A South Dakota sculptor has been chosen to make a statue of Cresco native Dr. Norman Borlaug that will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol.

The bronze statue will stand 7 feet tall, and will be placed in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol as one of the two depicting important figures from the state of Iowa.

Borlaug, a Cresco native, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his role in combating world hunger.

Victor will be working to install the statue in March of 2014, around the time of what would have been Borlaug’s 100th birthday.

Former ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn, chairman of the Borlaug Statue Committee, said Victor was selected after a year-long search that began with 65 artists from around the world.

Gov. Terry Branstad announced Tuesday that a committee created by the Iowa Legislature had chosen Benjamin Victor of Aberdeen for the sculpture.
