Sculptor Benjamin Victor opens a gallery and studio at Boise State

The former auto depot at Boise State University has a decidedly new look and feel these days as the Benjamin Victor Gallery, which also is a working art studio. It’s where Professor of Practice Victor creates bronze and clay sculpture, employs student assistants, develops hands-on learning opportunities that will deepen BSU’s already rich art department and runs a gallery filled with his and other artists’ work.

 

Benjamin Victor Gallery Brings World-Renowned Sculpture to Campus

The 7,500-square-foot gallery is one of its kind in the country — an interactive space where students can learn from a living master and the general public is welcome to peruse towering nine-foot-tall bronze and marble sculptures and larger-than-life busts, as well as works in progress and at least 15 priceless clay originals from which bronze versions of Victor’s most famous sculptures are cast.

After much planning and research, Benjamin Victor, a sculptor, was located in South Dakota. At 35, Mr. Victor is the only living sculptor to have two statues in the United States Capitol. His impressive and detailed works are displayed with pride across the world. He is currently working on the preliminary design of a seven and a half foot bronze sculpture of a Kentucky State Trooper that will take into account every detail that makes our uniform the historic and iconic symbol that it is. When completed, the sculpture will set in the middle of the academy courtyard on a custom granite base.

Victor, formerly Artist in Residence at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, was chosen from among a national pool of sculptors to complete the commissioned Appleton statue. He has since been named an Artist in Residence and Professor of the Practice at Boise State and has moved to Boise.
