Recently veterans gathered for viewing of the World War II statue at Ben Victor’s studio at Northern State University. The nearly 8-foot-statue of an Army Air Corps pilot will eventually be displayed at the airport in Boise, Idaho.

Towering more than 8 feet tall, Belle Babb Mansfield stands overlooking the community that helped her become the first woman admitted to the bar in the United States. On Friday, the bronze statue honoring the Iowa Wesleyan College alumna was dedicated on the east side of campus in front of community members and national and local luminaries.

As diplomats and community leaders heaped praise on Ben Victor’s war memorial at Aberdeen Regional Airport, the local artist said that without the stories of veterans his sculptures wouldn’t be so meaningful or moving.
The lone cowboy looks into the distance as he sits upon his trusty quarter horse. Dedicated to ranchers of both past and present, the sculpture represents the ranching way of life. Ranchers provide food for billions of people across the country and around the world.

I saw a vision of an angel floating weightlessly on outstretched wings. She evokes a sense of ethereal beauty, as the viewer is swept away by her dynamic and graceful lines.

The former auto depot at Boise State University has a decidedly new look and feel these days as the Benjamin Victor Gallery, which also is a working art studio. It’s where Professor of Practice Victor creates bronze and clay sculpture, employs student assistants, develops hands-on learning opportunities that will deepen BSU’s already rich art department and runs a gallery filled with his and other artists’ work.

After such an impressive career, you wouldn’t expect Boise State’s new Artist in Residence and Professor of the Practice to look so young. Halfway through his thirties, artist Benjamin Victor is already in the same league as many artists he’s emulated since college.

Though he died in 1981, Cecil Harris’ life-size bronze likeness will live on for generations to come as it sits just outside Spafford Hall on Northern’s campus. Just as the artist who made the statue — Northern artist-in-residence Benjamin Victor — wanted, Harris is looking over the campus he once frequented, then Northern State Teachers College, before graduating upon his return from combat.
